Meanwhile, the June 3 issue of AutoWeek Magazine ( autoweek.com ) talks about the partnership between direct- importer SMART-Automobile LLC and ZAP, which is setting up a dealer network for the gasoline car along with its electric cars, motorbikes, ATVs and other vehicles. The article noted modifications made to the cars to meet U.S. crash standards, having been tested from the front, side, rear and roof. SMART Auto plans to sell 15,000 SMART "fortwo" models a year and ZAP says this is the first time a safety-certified SMART is available in the United States.
AutoWeek says that last year 122,300 SMART Cars were sold in 30 countries worldwide. While ZAP has not initiated sales for the SMART car yet, news of the car coming to the U.S. has attracted many who have been waiting to buy them, some of them for years.
