Soviet Union would have collapsed anyway because of the fact that socialism did not and cannot work. Reagan's buildup sped things along, but only because it was accompanied by a vigorous diplomatic effort.

Of course, you won't read this view point in the broadsheets of Blogovia (the side of the blogosphere that has Eschaton at the top of its blog roll, i.e. the left side, the conservative/libertarian axis being known as Blogistan), simply because they refuse to admit that the socialist experiment was given a fair trial, and it failed.
