I don't understand how this thing works. Normally 5 foot waves would just break harmlessly on the beach, even on a low-lying island.

Obviously the tsunami pushed an enormous volume of water on shore ... it must be similar to a hurricane storm surge, where the size of the wave isn't indicative of the volume of water being moved.
