Merry X'mas and Happy Holidays everyone.

Here's some news from Digitimes this morning.

SD cards in tight supply due to Toshiba production problems
Original date: 2004/12/27
Translator: Jack Lu
The supply of Secure Digital (SD) flash-memory cards is currently falling short of growing demand as Toshiba may be experiencing some production problems for its SD modules, according to sources with DRAM-module makers in Taiwan.

The sources did not detail Toshiba’s problem, but they claimed the problem is affecting card supply worldwide.

According to the sources, due to license fees, many card vendors prefer to source complete modules from Toshiba and other major top-tier flash-memory players, rather than purchasing chips and manufacturing their own modules.

The sources indicated that SD cards are currently selling better than other types of flash-memory cards, and the shortage of 256MB and 512MB cards is currently more severe than that of other densities. They expect the supply crunch to last through January 2005.
