There's a long-winded email providing an excruciating level of detail some months ago, but I'll summarize here:

The Inbox counter in top.aspx does a simple count of items in folder_links with folderid=1.

The routines (pub and prv) to fetch the Inbox contents have code to exclude messages where the inquiring user is not the recipient if the message. This is a "safety" filter to prevent listing of messages with errant folder_links.

How do illegal items get into folder_links.folderid=1?

- Unknown bug from before go-live. May not exist anymore.

- Public message is deleted before being read by recipient. Already fixed.

- User executes an illegal "Return to Inbox" from a folder where the message was never in the Inbox in the first place. This could be any of the following message types:

o A filed public message from the user to another user
o A filed public message not to or from the user
o A filed private message from the user to another user

Example URL:
siliconinvestor.com

All of the three above message types "count" as Inbox unread messages, but none will display in the Inbox.

Comprendo?
