RE: "But it's a dangerous strategy, because it leads to all kinds of further questions"
Questions? As far as the media is concerned, it didn't happen. The article you posted appears to be completely unique as far as quoting the statement.

In the land of the free and the home of the brave, the people don't need to know about such things. A public admission by the Secretary of Defense that the same people who attacked New York and Washington also shot down the plane, isn't something the mainstream media reports these days. It is an especially interesting slip considering how few Islamic terrorists own military jets armed with missiles.
One of the biggest holes in the official story of what happened to Flight 93 is why it was shot down within minutes of the passengers attempting to regain control of the plane, after having been off course for nearly an hour. There's no doubt it was wrecked in the air, the debris field proves that. If the plane was rigged with special equipment, or if there were hijackers who were not Islamic extremists, allowing the plane to land safely would be a definite liability.
As strange as I find many of Gus's theories, the idea Rumsfeld might fire a warning shot across the bow with his job in danger, doesn't strike me as being all that far fetched. If the media had actually run with the story, he could easily retract the statement saying the statement was a figure of speech, and considering the nearly complete media blackout, the statement easily serves the purpose of saying, "You can't fire me. I know too much.".
It's possible he is suffering from guilt and wants to confess, but that explanation would require the assumption he has a conscience.
Either way, it's certainly an interesting statement, to say the least. Thanks for posting it.
