To all,

What a difference a week makes. I guess I was a week early in my national roll-out of DVD SW survey. Friday I went back to the stores I visited last week. Much better results. I was really surprised at the two salesmen I talked to at The Good Guys. One of them was really impressive. He was convinced DVD would rule the world. He said they had great sales, especially in the high end models. They couldn't get enough of the $1000 Sony machine and the Pioneer dual laser disc/DVD player had such demand that they didn't even display it. If they were lucky enough to get one, they just kept it in the backroom and called someone from their waiting list. Their selection of available SW still sucked, but they showed me on their computer that they had 55 titles available. Most (but not all) were available one day later from their wharehouse if you ordered it. The second salesman I talked to here was also very positive on DVD. A complete change from the previous Saturday. Even more importantly, their Labor Day ad featured the second generation Toshiba for $749. I'm glad to see that the company is advertising.

Next I went back to Circuit City. This time the saleman I talked to was a little more low-key about DVD. He was selling one or two players a day himself in the week they had them. He thought that was pretty good for a new product, but not a blockbuster. He thought sales would pick up as Christmas approached. CC's ad featured two RCA players and also mentioned several SW titles. CC's stock of SW is still much better than The Good Guys.

Rick
