There will always be those among us for whom fear, ignorance and hatred combine and give reason to believe that our policies receive political support within the US from the isolationist and ignorant "right". I sometimes receive email -- chain email -- from relatives who frequent these circles. They pray for our soldiers but are offended by any expression of sympathy for Iraqis. For them,it is Christian versus those murderous bastards -- Muslims.

It is not hard to rally their political support. Say you hate gays. Say you want to kill our enemies and generalize "the enemy" to include all those dirty Muslims. Then tell them you are for public funds for church activities and promise tax cuts -- no matter how financially irresponsible those cuts might be. That is the end of the conversation -- support Christians and tax cuts and hate gays and Muslims and you will have enough votes to rule the USA and then the world.
