"Based purely on the nature of this beast, I ask you if you see any possibility of a let-up in sight, or a point when the tide begins to flow significantly in the opposite direction, toward a more secure Internet?"

That's a great question Frank. I am personally not very optimistic - just based on the sheer combinatorics of the problem.

There are probably a few radicals like me out there who are routinely scanning everything for malicious code, filtering email through remote sites, and then sending any spam that leaks through to the FTC. But the sheer numbers of those who don't currently makes the internet the wild west.

I like your suggestion that this is an engineering problem at a larger level than Microsoft and the software companies. The problem needs to be addressed at that level rather than individual PCs. I currently filter all of my internet traffic and email through servers that can pick up viruses and spam on the fly. I suppose it is only a matter of time before they figure out how to pick up the spyware.

Too bad that some of these guys don't have a 57 Chevy in the back yard that they could work on instead?

George

For IEEE members out there, I encourage a look at one of the member benefits, the alias and the IEEE UCE/Spam Filtering Service. It is a wall out there of sorts that allows you to block senders by email address, domain, and host.
