I'm no fan of Amelio but he did two things right: he pulled the plug in a lot of this crapshoots, including Copland. He also licensed clones.

My biggest complaint is that the did not fire enough people from day one. One could see from a mile away that a lot more people and perks needed to be gone for Apple to be profitable, but he choose to proudly "announce" that no more layoffs were neded, only to have to reverse himself a couple of quarters later.

At times it seems like the "reality distortion field" from Jobs was built into the MacOS, warping the vicinity of any given Mac.
This impeded Mac users, designers and managers from seeing the obvious.

I'm glad Apple has vacated its offices in 1 Infinite Loop. They should now move HQ's to 1997 Reality Drive.

Perhaps then they will face reality, and implement a plan along the lines of the CPU+OS package proposed by Bill Jackson a few weeks back as well as other proposals posted in SI. (Win95 compatiblity among them)

--Double click on reality, mate --- is what we used to say in school when somebody was out to lunch. This would be good advice for Apple.
