So if the Kurds declared independence, Turkey would sweep down and crush them, and we'd be obligated to stand aside and let it happen.

Where in the world do you get this conviction that Turkey would invade a newly formed country on its southern borders? It would mean no EU, international condemnation, and probably turn Turkey into a deathzone as the US repels them out of Iraqi Kurdustan.

The fact that Turkey does not want Kurdish sovereignity on its border does not equate to Turkey will invade.
