Jay, the resort on a hill is obviously the way to go. Just sit around the pool and watch the ocean off in the distance. If you must visit the beach, head for high ground if there's a major quake in your part of the world.

How do you get timely notification of a major quake? Until a tsunami warning system is established for the Indian Ocean, you could monitor our system with one of your gee-whiz web-enabled devices. In fact you can even sign up to get an automatic email whenever a bulletin is enabled. This would not predict a tsunami in your area, but does seem to cover earthquakes over a very large area of the globe. There may also be other international sites that issue emails about quakes.

Here is the bulletin that was sent out 15 minutes after the recent major quake near Sumatra...

EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA LEVEL CHANGES. IN AREAS OF INTENSE
SHAKING LOCALLY GENERATED TSUNAMIS CAN BE TRIGGERED BY SLUMPING.


THE PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WILL ISSUE TSUNAMI BULLETINS
FOR HAWAII AND OTHER AREAS OF THE PACIFIC.
