I assert the problem is one of penalty rather than shortage of police. The increasing passage of more and more police state policies by the federal and state governments is a byproduct of the statement you made. "Please protect us! We need more police." Enforcement of the existing laws and adjusting penalties would likely reduce drunk driving by a massive amount. Let's say you got 5 years hard time(no exceptions for sports figures, politicians, etc.) on a work gang doing public works projects(think park improvements) for 1st offense drunk driving. Think taxi cabs would benefit? LOL even though it's not a laughing matter.
