My home town had a cement block factory too, but the blocks were mainly used to build farm silos and house basements.

The ICF (insulated concrete form) method sounds pretty good. First the styrofoam forms are set up and reinforced with steel, then the concrete is poured. The foam is left in place for insulation. The result is a strong, well-insulated house for about the same price as wood construction. Not sure I like the idea of all that styrofoam in the house, though. It may out-gas some unpleasant chemicals.
