Mt. Baker - Mission Abort
I made it within an hour of Mount Baker this morning before the French Canadian in whose van I was traveling decided to loop back and through the Sumas boarder crossing which we had transected not ten minutes before. The decision came as a result of the Quebecois' observation that it was a day not unlike those of winters he recalled back home, in the far eastern reaches of this fine country - icy winter winds, sub zero temperatures and dark, menacing clouds issuing their chill across the horizon. This was observed by all present as we made a pit stop for gasoline - the fateful moment. The wheels avoidance had been set in motion. But, it was to be an ill fated choice. For, although it began as a cold day, through the power of modern technology I can tell now that the sun has emerged from between the clouds, Mount Baker's alpine area has warmed from -20 c to -13 c , and the winds have calmed. This leaves prime conditions in which to ski the 'trace' 20cms of fresh which fell on the mountain last night. Ski travel tip #1 : Never let the distractions of travel interfere with the realization of your skiing goals.
