I didn't see the criticism coming. I attributed the initial reaction of the "outrage machine" to overreaction to the stupid comments of some UN functionary. The administration played it all wrong, a big-time lost opportunity, but I can't find any charitable way to interpret the NYT commentary.

The administration has been very clear. They do not want to have much to do with the United Nations. They do not want to have much to do with "old Europe". They do not want to have much to do with anyone not doing things our way.

It's a philosophy. There are many people subscribing to this - including a lot of very smart people.
