I agree only to a certain extent. Your statement is true. However, the SS fund has a definite amount of assets, which our gov't owes it. Those asset will disappear by 2042, NOT because of our gov't running a deficit. Instead, they will disappear because payout to retirees will exceed contributions enough by 2042 to use up all of those assets.

Now, if the gov't was running a surplus, then we could use the surplus to fix SS, so that it wouldn't run out by 2042, so they are linked. However, you can still fix SS, even if our gov't is running a deficit. So they are linked but they are NOT dependent on each other.
