The U.S. created thousands of new terrorists by invading Iraq. As I've noted here before, Saddam Hussein had a very firm grip on Iraq, which was a secular state, and tolerated neither terrorists or religious conservatives, because they would have threatened his iron grip on the society.

Pottery Barn doesn't actually have that "you break it, you're bought it" policy that people keep talking about, but the policy does apply here. It is hard to imagine the U.S. making a bigger mess in Iraq than we have. So yes, it is our fault. And even though former Baathists leaders are financing some of the terror at this point, most of the insurgents on the ground are Iraqis who are fighting for freedom from American oppression the same way you would do if the Iraqis came here and leveled our cities with bombs and killed our women and children. It never ceases to amaze me that American right wingers are somehow absolutely incapable of imagining themselves in other situations, and wondering how they would respond. A complete lack of empathy or willingness to look at all sides of an issue, I guess.
