Consequences for the US will much worse than the piece acknowledges. That because it is directed to an US audience and it would raise a few eye brows if the author painted the picture in dire colors.

The consequences are that millions of menial workers will brave the Homeland Security act and the 1984 type of life to seek a better life in the US while the brains go elsewhere.

There are options for the people trying to seek countries for their education. Perhaps not as good option as the US provides, but there are possibilities. So other countries will benefit.

1984 type of life is like if you are called Ramirez and there's a drug guy called Ramirez you're in trouble in the US even if your wife is American, your kids are American and you teach at a university.

That’s because this security thing is very subjective, and gives a not very high educated officer a power to decide whom he should put under the microscope. If you don't fit a certain body frame, have dark skin wear a beard, you're in trouble.

My friend -a Brazilian- manages a mobile project for Siemens in the US. One of his engineers, an Indonesian, on returning from his second home holiday, to the US with his wife was sent back to Indonesia. All papers were in absolute order. Siemens attorneys have to go clear him. He just happened to be Indonesian. And his name is Balinese and has not got even a muslin name like millions of Indonesians.

My friend told me all his engineers were asking the Indonesian guy: What should they do to be seen as a dangerous guys so that the US officers send then back home and they get a couple of weeks extra PAID vacation.

Happy New year, BF!
