The first reason for going to war was Iraq had WMD. That he was a threat to the US. Smoking Gun = Mushroom Cloud.

When it appeared that Iraq had no WMD the reason changed.

The second reason for going to war was that Iraq had WMD programs. What is a WMD program? Is it a collection of books? Papers about WMD? A desire for WMD? Hard to say.

The third reason for the war was to get rid of Saddam. This was made a reality with Saddam's capture. So it's not a reason anymore.

The fourth reason for the war is to bring democracy to the middle east. This is the same reason that the PNAC endorsed attacking Iraq for the last decade. Stabilization of the middle east.

Seems this fourth reason will be good for quite a while to come. That's because the Shia, the Sunni and the Kurds all want to be self governed. Will Sunni allow Shia to dictate to them the way that the Sunni had done under Saddam? Will the Kurds align with the Sunni? The Shia? or remain partitioned in the north? Will Turkey allow the Kurds of Eastern Turkey gain control there? Will war break out in eastern Turkey?

Seems the final solution may once again be the emergence of a strongman like Saddam that can rule the people with brutal hand. Either that or the partitioning of Iraq into three nations, either politically or militarily. In effect Iraq is partitioned already. The elections, if held this month, will simply point out the polarities between the factions.

The fifth reason for war may be to keep civil war from breaking out in Iraq...we shall see.

I wonder what the first reason to pull out of Iraq will be?
