Indonesia was allowed to do things that nowhere else could be possible because they were a "good" allied of Washington due to its strategic position in the South China Sea. one of those tolerated creatures of the Cold War like South Africa and Israel still is. Imagine a country as long 1/4 of the circumference of the earth. Starts in Banda Aceh (near Thailand) and go all the way to Papua New Guinea. It as aglomerate of islands whose people have nothing to do with each other. Most of the 200million+ population is concentrated in Java Island. (120million+). Trasmigrasi, a government sponsored project to transfer people from java to other islands, backfired. It created animosity between the natives of the islands against the new comers from Java. Whose heads they like to chop off and whose properties they like to burn. In their favor, Suharto regime was not that cleptocracies we see in Africa. At least the proceeds were invested in indonesia.
