The "Boom of the Eighties" in Southern California (1880s)

1876 - Completion of the first railroad to Los Angeles by the Southern Pacific.
1881 - The first issue of the Los Angeles Times is published.

1882 - Land prices in Los Angeles appreciate significantly under the influence of widespread publicity by the Los Angeles Times.
1882 - Los Angeles gets it's first telephone system.

1885 - Completion of a competing rail line to Los Angeles by the Santa Fe.
1886 - A fare war breaks out between the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe which reduces fares by more than 90% from St Louis to Los Angeles, to a low of $1.

1889 - Land prices reach their peak bubble prices and decline by mid-1890 they have declined by 90%.

1890 - In an attempt to reignite the collapsed real estate boom, members of the Pasadena Valley Hunt Club hold the first "Tournament of Roses".

Heavily publicized by the Los Angeles Times, each year on January 1, East Coast residents are reminded that flowers are blooming in Southern California and the weather is sunny. Here's one history from this point:
