I think the truth lies somewhere between your position and that of Laz. After we declared war on Japan, Hitler was obliged to declare war on us in accordance with the Axis three-power pact. Hitler's ambitions were confined to conquering Europe and he did not wish to be at war with us, although he might have envisioned that possibility as coming later in the "1,000 year Reich."

As for FDR, he didn't want war to get out of the Depression, but was convinced that we needed to save Britain. He believed that the fall of Britain, which was likely, would create a Nazi fortress-Europe which would constitute a grave long-term threat to the Americas.

A lot of people today don't realize how uncertain our leaders were in 1941 as to our ability to win a war on two fronts against the combined might of the Axis powers. As it turned out, our victory resulted from a good deal of luck as well as a number of critical mistakes on Hitler's part.
