Flu season in the US usually peaks in February, but can vary season to season. The virus lives longer in the cold and is most easily transmitted under crowded conditions.

Air travel could move the virus around quite quickly. SARS in 2003 was spread internationally from one person (who visited the Metropole Hotel in late February). It doesn't take much if the virus is contagious, which sounds like that is the case in Sri Lanka. Many questions remain
