<<After reading about the huge numbers of dead being disposed of in mass graves after the tsunami, it strikes me that people may not be aware how easy it is to preserve DNA for genetic testing. A simple cotton swab can be used to pick up cells and then wrapped in wax paper, and a notation attached as to disposal of the body. >>

Just a few problems with that. People in California don't understand DNA, OJ trial, so I doubt many would know about it in the damaged area. Hell, it took a sharp cookie like you a week to think of it, the average schmoe looking at piles of bodies probably wouldn't think of it even if he understood DNA. Then you have to have something to match the DNA to. I doubt they had swabs and wax paper on hand if they don't have food and potable water. Then you have the burst factor. These are bodies in a hot area bloating in the Sun. I know the township guys hate picking up dead deer in the summer that have been dead 3 days, they usually burst open going into the loader bucket.
