I can't imagine what we will be able to sell the world in the future. I agree that we have lost our science edge. All the children in their twenties in my family--Grainnette and all her cousins--are preparing for jobs as teachers or retail managers because these are jobs that cannot be exported. I was listening to talk radio in the car the other day, and the guest who was sitting in for Michael Savage--I don't remember his name--was remarking that we have made a huge mistake by destroying our industrial economy, our manufacturing plants. He was arguing that it was extremely shortsighted because we might need our manufacturing plants in case of a national emergency if we were at war with parts of the world where our manufacturing jobs have disappeared to. I think it is also really unfortunate because every society needs jobs for the percentage of the population that does not make it to college or enter the professional classes. A strong middle class is absolutely vital for a healthy nation.

This guest was also talking about Bush's proposed guest worker program. He thought it was very dangerous because if we have a lot of Mexican guest workers employers will be able to pay them very little. Other businesses, in order to compete, will also have to lower wages. You really can only look at the guest worker proposal as a huge gift to the corporate heads who are his constituency, a way to increase their profits/income, which are already huge by historical measures.
