And while doing so they (Italy) have moved on from Banana Republic levels to way ahead of German economy in structure and development.

and Ted comments:
LOL. Could your clearly biased assessment have anything to to do with the fact that Schroder is liberal and Berlusconi is a rightie?

Anybody who believes Berlusconi in his short time could have moved Italy ahead of what Germany has become in the meantime is truly naive. Anybody who believes even a "rightie" - regardless of how stupid they come - could believe that belongs locked up in a rubber cell himself.
I am a big fan of Italy but not necessarily of the person Berlusconi.

What has happened in Italy positively and in Germany on the downside has roots going way back. If you read my post again you see I mentioned Kohl right next to Schroder. At least Kohl achieved something though: The reunion.
Schroder so far has achieved nothing. He now has a full two years to surprise us.

Go on a trip to Germany next summer and look around in cities over there like Schwerin, Wismar and Stralsund. Compare their handsomely renovated downtowns with the cities in Ruhr and you know why old Germany gets jealous and complains that so much money was put to work in the East.
Anyway, I am not German, only pay most of my taxes here. Some of it in the US as well.
