- UMTS currently has a number of deficiencies when compared with other existing and emerging technologies

- For example:
- Too much latency
- Too little performance in some areas
- Spectrum efficiency

snip....

- North American market place is very competitive
- UMTS Release 5 (HSDPA) falls short in performance when compared to 1x-DO
- UMTS Release 6 has defined performance improvements-but competitive pressures require even better performance and more capabilities

I found the above quotes from a presentation given at a 3GPP conference.

Is this Qualcomm backsliding into criticizing W-CDMA? Nope.

Is it Flarion hoping to show how F-OFDM provides a better solution. Nope.

Drumroll please....

It is Stephen Brust, Director of Wireless Standards....for Cingular!!!

I am absolutely amazed that they were willing to put comments like that in a public document. They are acknowledging the fact that even if they get HSDPA up and running in the short to medium term that they will be behind 1xEV-DO and that even the next version of W-CDMA (with an enhanced uplink) doesnt meet what they believe the market needs. The fact that they are pushing so hard for HSDPA makes these comments even more surprising.

Of course, I'm not actually sure that this is good news. HSDPA and EUL W-CDMA are the two technologies that are most likely to keep the GSM operators on a CDMA track.

Brust did backoff a little bit from the remarks during the Q&A. This document provides a summary of all of the presentations during the 3GPP meeting.

Comments
It was asked if the statement in slide 7 on the performance of 1xDO against HSDPA implies that the
spectral efficiency is better. Stephen clarified that it is more the feeling got from commercial
products than the result of a proper technical study.

I guess if you were looking for a hole in his comments, you could make the case that current HSDPA equipment will improve significantly and surpass 1xEV-DO Release A.

In any case, here is a link to the presentation...
