I'm happy to be corrected. I admit that the labels left-winger and right-winger have absurdly imprecise meaning to me. I just like the expression "rabid right-wing republicans" and Mitterand was a republican and found an excuse to use it.
I think of left wing as freedom and right wing as government. But it used to be left wing was union, serf, the poor, and right wing was the landed gentry, wealthy and privileged.
I really don't understand the definitions these days [that most people give]. Currently, in New Zealand, I'm considered an extreme right-winger, being a libertarian libertarianz.org.nz and act.org.nz supporter and liberal supporter liberalvalues.org.nz. Oddly, I think of myself as a freedom-loving anti-statist left-winger. Fascists, communists and statists are right wingers.

Also, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II vs Helen of Helengrad. Plus Telecom CEO Theresa Gattung vs Helengrad. Not to mention Theresa Gattung vs Rosemary Howard [of Telstra-Clear]. Women are running New Zealand. The blokes all hang out in cyberspace, in the shed, or pub, or at the golf course.

PS: I recall in 1981 I was in London when Mitterand won the presidency and a French woman I was talking with bemoaned his win. I was somewhat bemused, and politically naive, not realizing how much damage politicians can do in a relatively short time if given reign and free rein by the public. I thought she was being melodramatic. |
