My point is that in times of crisis the world looks to the President of the United States.

All Bush had to do was get on television in person on December 27th in - his work jeans and work shirt - and express America's deepest sympathy for the victims and promise that all the resources America could muster would be made available to assist the survivors.

That's all he had to do. He didn't have to quote dollars or details, just show up and say "We understand. We will help in any way we can."

His silence was interpreted as disinterest. He's largely rectified that with his actions since then, and I applaud him for it. If he continues to direct America's response as he has since December 29th the first three days of non-response will be forgotten.
