China, Venezuela to stop CFC production

Tokyo, Japan, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- China and Venezuela have said they will stop producing chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone-destroying substances in 2007, Kyodo News reported Sunday.

Sources involved with the 1987 Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer said the two countries decided to close factories that produce CFCs and other substances that deplete the stratospheric ozone layer by the end of 2007, two years earlier than the Montreal Protocol called for.

After the two countries carry out their plans, some of the most potent ozone-depleting substances, including CFCs, will have been discontinued everywhere on the globe.

The two nations agreed to close their factories after countries involved in the protocol decided to provide China with $10 million and Venezuela with $16.5 million from the Montreal Protocol's multilateral fund to help cover costs of the plan.

Beijing plans to close its factories in July 2007 and Venezuela will shut down its CFC plants in January 2007.
