Tim:

I cannot disagree with your sentiments. BUT....after a day in the UK of listening to Diane being sanctified I must protest at some of the "lessons" being drawn.

Diane has relentlessy used the media, first to undermine her marriage, husband and his family, then to win sympathy for her own pecaddilos, then as a kind of therapists couch. Only last week several commentators were remarking on her extraordinary courting of the media in the Dodi affair. Analysts have said that unless she sees herself on the cover of the tabloids, she does not feel that she exists. She needed the media interest to affirm her importance and the value of her charitable work. In fact, it is the media who have made her a "star". It is true that at times she resented media intrusion and was frustrated that she could not control it.

Diane took herself out of the Royal Family and explained that she voluntarily gave up the Her Royal Highness title so that she would be free not to observe the normal restrictions self-imposed by the Royal Family. These included the use of bodyguards, trained drivers and keeping ones intimate relationships as private as possible.

Her accident happened because her companion hired a car whose driver was apparently given instucitons or allowed to drive far above the speed limit in the middle of the night in downtown Paris through a tunnel which is difficult and dangrous at 50 kph in daylight. One has to question the assumptions of her driver/companion that they were above the law, in this respect.

However, greedy and obnoxious the photographers - given that she had courted them on the subject of her relatiosnhip with her companion, I believe that that they might have been better off if they had allowed innocuous photographs of themselves sitting in the car as they departed the Ritz..

To prevent flaming can I finish by stating that I am very sorry about her death especially sorry for her two sons and her former husband. She had many very good qualities. Her good qualities were not superior to what is found among millions of ordinary people in the UK. She had many advanatages which ordinary folk do not have and was allowed to show her qualities in the best possible light by the media. Her qualities are nonetheless admirable for that.
