Your quotes relate to cholesterol lowering - I'm talking about statin use, which is quite different (although it is true that statins lower cholesterol).

Here's an example of statin use shown to be beneficial in women:

There are any number of studies showing that statins have a beneficial effect on mortality and also prevent stroke and heart attacks. The size of the effect isn't huge, but the totality of the effect summed over all the people taking statins certainly is.

It may be that flu vaccines have a bigger effect on mortality, but I was thinking of chronic diseases.
