Interesting development:

By Emory Thomas Jr.
MSNBC As expected, Bookseller Barnes & Noble, a relatively late entrant in online commerce, announced a deal Wednesday to become the sole book vendor on Lycos Inc.'s popular search service.

ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿTHE THREE YEAR AGREEMENT calls for a "substantial" up-front payment by Barnes & Noble. It also entails the sharing of future revenues from both advertising and book sales.
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿ"This is a very big deal," said Alan Braverman, analyst with Credit Suisse First Boston, reached in his office late Tuesday. "It could be a real shot in the arm for Lycos," he added.
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿThe Barnes & Noble-Lycos pact signals an acceleration in the contentious battle over book sales on the Internet. The giant retailer is disputing online merchant Amazon.com's claim to be the "Earth's biggest bookstore."
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿThe online efforts of the two companies are being closely watched in electronic-commerce circles for clues to coming marketing battles between online brands like Amazon.com and traditional brands like Barnes & Noble.
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿThe pact also lends a substantial degree of credibility to Lycos, which is locked in a battle with Yahoo!, Excite and other search services for both new customers and new revenue streams.
ÿ ÿ ÿ ÿThe Barnes & Noble-Lycos agreement closely follows multimillion-dollar book deals sealed this summer by Lycos rivals Yahoo and Excite with Amazon.com.
