Your response was all well and good but it doesn't address my question. Why get married if it reduces your freedom over other legal arrangements that you can make?

I'm talking about heterosexuals. Sowell's point was much the same as yours--couples can make their own deals and that should work great for homosexual couples. No reason for them to be welcomed in the marriage club. I'm interested in the flip side he didn't consider. Why, then, would any couple choose the restrictions of the marriage club? If marriage is a restriction of freedom, if you need to make other arrangements like prenups to compensate, why marry?

Those who are "defending marriage" may have a Phyrric victory when marriage dies out among heterosexuals.
