<.... you need some kind of common sense middle path that leads all venezolanos to a sense of responsibility for their own actions, maybe don Hugo can rise to this, let's hope so ....>
Agreed ... this is the challenge. I'm amazed at the natural wealth of Venezuela -- which opens up the possibility of a balanced solution. I mean it's not the Sahel. I saw something in one of your Rio Caroni links that stated that 75% of the energy needs of the country will be met by hydro. So they have the potential to earn even vaster amounts of dollars (or Euros, renmimbi, etc.) from the sale of crude. If Chavez can find a balance in terms of the distribution of that wealth, then all strength to him. Vamos a ver... The alternative is the Colombia model -- similarly wealthy, but chaotic, violent, polarized, etc., and the vast majority living in abject poverty. There has to be a better way (mild understatement... :^)
<to define 'frustration', just try explaining libertarian positions to nine out of ten latinos .... easy to get agreement that the person you're talking to shouldn't have to face any legal walls to his endeavours, of course he is a free man and should be able to do anything he wants ..... but then apply it to his neighbour, or worse, to that foreigner from a village ten miles distant, and no way José, that guy should be locked up and the key thrown away, if he tries anything at all ...>
LOL! A complex diplomatic process is required... <vbg>
