For religious reasons. Americans are so religious, you could eliminate civil marriage and you would see only a small dip in the marriage rate. I've actually been leaning towards that position for years.

If, as Sowell asserts, both kinds of couples could make their own arrangements without marriage whereas marriage limited their freedom, why marry. Sowell overlooked that consequence of his argument.
