Rather than hashing and rehashing we should try to concentrate on a few salient points regarding iraq.
1. We went in for best of intentions and what propelled us was the wmds which everyone thought existed.
2. Given an assumption of wmds the fair opposition would have argued for us to hold off until inspections were completed. With 20/20 hindsight and no wmds #2 gains strength and too many folks are forgetting that it only gains strenght because of the 20/20 hindsight.
3. Many operational mistakes have been made as in all wars. Our intel seems imo to misunderstand the nature of iraq and moslems with the exception of the Kurds. We probably should have engaged the insurgents earlier for example.
3. Since we have neither achieved success to date nor seem to be able to do so in the near future, our situation in iraq should be reevaluated post election. We have to remember that despite all the nice talk about democracy, it cannot be achieved with out iraqi involvement. The triangle will continue to be a mess and we have to reevaluate our strategy in the above light. Reevaluation doesnt automatically mean change unless its called for. The interests of the US need to come first as always. mike
