The maddening thing is that those of us who already have high opinions about the US are being told by those who already have low opinions about the US that we should not expect any improvement in world opinion based on doing good deeds for the tsunami victims.

In other words, we're scum, and should simply accept that nothing we do will improve our status as scum. Asking for a re-evaluation of our status as scum is "soiling".

Damned if we do, damned if we don't, but don't stop giving.
