That comparison implies that we cut back on the military.

Yes, we spend too much on defense systems......and in many cases, they are redundant.

We might as well compare our tsunami relief to Congressional salaries or pork to subsidize many U.S. industries like corporate farming, etc. I'd rather cut back those useless things, rather than cut back on the world's only attempt in 50 years to bring democracy to the Middle East.

There is good reason why its the world's only attempt.

Even though most would agree Bush has been poorly executing his democracy drive, the vision is good and we should spend the money to give it the best shot possible.

Not if I had my druthers........the odds favor very much that it will fail. I hate throwing good money after bad.

The alternative is a worsening of the status quo and a continuation of the boiling cauldron of the Middle East. And I for one am sick of hearing about Muslims killing other Muslims and non-Muslims in terrorist attacks.

Its a boiling cauldron for good reason. When those issues get addressed, then and only then will the ME calm down.
