K, it's been years since I read it. As I recall, the Durant's argued that all successful societies had at the core tightly bound family units. This implies marriage, hopefully tending toward permanent and monogomous.

I'm also partial toward the Hayekian view. Hard-won knowledge is incorporated into the cultural values that are passed down, often through religion. Much is beyond the understanding of almost any particular individual.

Any replacement to old traditions will be accompanied with tremendous pain, while generations of players rediscover old truths, perhaps in different permutations.

We trifle with tested traditions at great risk.
