Jonathan,

You asked some time ago about how long it took investors to catch on to Microsoft. I recently purchased some data that may be illuminating. According to the data Microsoft went public on Thursday, March 13, 1986. The stock closed that day at an adjusted price (as of October 1, 1996) of 1.556. One year later (3/13/87) the stock closed at 4.597.

The stock got slaughtered in the crash that occured in October of 1987, but as of March 14, 1988 it closed at 7.069. The stock traded sideways for much of 1988 and half of 1989. At that point the stock started running and hasn't looked back.

The numbers I have given you don't account for the most recent split, so the comparable number for Friday's close is about $264.00, or a profit of over 16000% for those who bought at the closing price some 11 1/2 years ago.

So, the basic answer to your question is that it didn't take all that long for the market to catch on to Microsoft. One year paper profits were approximately 200%. Of course, those who bought and held. . .

Stephan
