LONDON (CBS.MW) - TiVo Inc. shares rose as much as 9 percent Thursday after the maker of digital video recorders said it would team up with Microsoft and others on new features, including one for recording television shows onto DVDs and portable electronic devices.

Tivo (TIVO) shares rose 32 cents, or almost 6 percent, to $5.80 in early trading. Earlier, the shares touched $6.00.

The new technology being developed by TiVo and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), along with Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), and Sonic Solutions, (SNIC) will allow consumers to view recorded shows on handheld gadgets via its new "TiVoToGo" service.

Separately, a report said the company planned to release a video service without a set-top box. In an interview at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, TiVo Chief Executive Michael Ramsay told Reuters that the company was looking to gain new customers through so-called direct feed technology.

That would allow consumers to download movies and other content over the Internet using search technology built into TiVo's viewing screen. Ramsay also said TiVo would embrace the CableCARD initiative, which allows televisions to link to digital cable systems without the use of a set-top box.
