Research has shown that people who engage in altruism experience a beneficial flow of endorphins, the feel-good hormones that the body produces. You can't do good without feeling good, so even if you do your best to be altruistic without getting anything in return, it's not possible.

I suspect that those who do good secretly may get a nicer high than those who do good publicly. If so, where's the self-sacrifice?

I only posted that because it expressed a view similar to mind about the tackiness of the competition.

I concur with your suspicions about doing good secretly. That works for me. I also subscribe to the related notion that you can accomplish a lot if you don't care who gets the credit. I proved that to my satisfaction on the job. Which is part of why this tacky competition turns me off so much.

I read the post from moenmac, I think, that specified contributions from Spielberg and some actor. I heard that DiCaprio made a contribution but the amount wasn't specified. I saw it reported that Bush contributed 10K. I'd love to be a fly on the wall when folks are discussing whether to reveal the amount or not. I can think of no good reason for doing so, but perhaps that's a shortfall of imagination on my part.
