That is absolutely correct... and --- as former beneficiaries of the Sunni tribal domination of Iraq --- they don't want to give that power up.

Iraq's likely religious / ethnic breakdown:

Shiite - 60%
Sunni - 20%
Kurdish - 15%

Thus, my prediction (once the US removes itself from their gunsights): civil war leading to partition of Iraq, with the Shiite majority (with close ties to IRAN) loosely allied with a mostly self-governing Kurdish proto-State in the North... and Sunni insurgents attacking both, but eventually being driven back, and forced into the willing arms of their co-religionists in Saudi Arabia / Syria / Jordan.
