Seems to me that in public it's more about showing off Seems to me that part of being charitable is not automatically thinking the worst of others. Especially when you have no way of knowing what's really going on inside their heads. What if you were wrong? What if you thought they were nasty and selfish and puffing themselves up, but really they were selfless and motivated by generosity? That wouldn't be very nice.
