Less Than Zero

By Cori Dauber

Every time the media rotates its people in and out of Baghdad, the military starts at zero again in terms of the knowledge base of the general assignment reporters sent to Iraq. But I swear to God, you would think that knowing they were headed to a war zone to cover the activities of the US military a reporter would at least do a bit of advance reading. On MSNBC Michelle Carruso-Cabrerro refers to yesterday's story of the death of 7 US service members in the attack on a Bradley fighting vehicle, and refers to "the tank."

Was ABC's reporter wrong last night, was the attack on a tank, and not a Bradley? MSNBC's web site story refers only to a "vehicle," no help there. But the AP story ABC uses is explicit: it was, indeed, a Bradley.

Well, lady, a Bradley ain't no tank.

Isn't the military entitled to expect that reporters will show up knowing at least that kind of basic information?
