<What standard?> To be real leaders we must set standards -- standards that inspire -- standards that set a direction that elevates the quality of life on this planet. The standard "whatever we can get away with" is not leadership -- it is a cynical powerplay. Until we start to identify our standards we will get nowhere. Power is an illusion. It is the province of the thug -- and that is the province we entered when we invaded Iraq and attempted to define our actions in expedient self-serving terms -- brushing aside the lack of legitimacy of the invasion and brushing aside our own humanity by looking for ways to legitimize abusive treatment of prisoners. We are not respected in the world today -- some will say we are feared. Others will simply say we are cursed. But by your standard it does not matter -- as long as we can get away with it.
