The great power of the United States is not its ability to kill -- we are not strong because we have a strong military. We are strong because we set standards that the rest of the world admires -- we no longer follow high standards and have shown ourselves willing to search for excuses to follow low, expedient standards -- and for that reason we have lost a substantial part of our power in the world. That is what our behavior in Iraq has cost us. You might weigh the cost in terms of who gets elected -- if Bush is reelected then it is cheap. But cheap it is not. It cost us our prestige. It cost us our credibility. It cost us our ability to lead the world.
