After the stock price run-up last week, it was interesting to receive the new BusinessWeek on Saturday and find a short article on page 6 about Apple getting into network computers.

Steve Jobs wasted no time pruning Apple Computer's product line since taking control in early July. But the company's co-founder, insiders say, is also working on brand-new products that he hopes will play a major role in Apple's future growth: network computers.

This is not surprising to me since Larry Ellison is on the board.

Company source say the NC's will run programs based on the Java programming language -- either on top of the MacOS found on today's Macs...

BIG mistake. Too much unneeded stuff in there...but can implement quickly.

...or without a conventional operating system. Some of these devices could appear in early 1998.

Now I don't mean to imply that Apple might turn to NCD for help, but Doug did once say that NCD could save Apple, the two companies are practically next door to each other, and NCD does use the PowerPC.

I briefly looked at info on NeXTStep/Rhapsody and although it is based on a Unix derivative, is multi-tasking, multi-threaded, I haven't found specific mention that it is multi-user. But with NT going multi-user, the impetus should be there.

One other thing. The HMX special is supposed to end today. Assuming it doesn't get extended (again) then maybe NCD is getting ready to unveil their new high end terminals. And when will terminal support for ICA be ready? That should be a big plus for the terminal's merits.
